'Choice' Character Profiles - A2 Film Studies

Character Profiles – ‘Choice’

Character 1

Name: Jamie Thompson

Age: 17 Years old

Personality: A confused, scared and stressed teenager who has got himself involved with the wrong people. He isn’t a naturally bad person but gives in easily to peer pressure and doesn’t have the confidence to rebel against others.

Costume Representation: Scene 1 – wears scruffy school uniform, he is still a schoolboy reflecting that he is young and in danger of failing. Scene 2 and 3 – he will be wearing black clothing, putting on a hooded jumper showing that he is about to do something in which he doesn’t want to be seen. Jamie will be wearing the same clothes in scene 4.

Why I chose this character: I wanted a character that would represent the difficulties of trying to break free of the social stereotypes of a young male teen from a lower class area.

Character 2

Name: Olario

Age: 21

Personality: Olario is a boy who has chosen the wrong path in life and is now trying to influence others to do the same. He picks on younger teens because he knows they are vulnerable and easy to attain power over. Olario is an intimidating and loud character that feels like the world is against him.

Costume Representation: Olario will be represented wearing an all black suit with a tie. These clothes represent Olario as a character who feels he has power, he feels has made a success of him self but in reality this is a false representation.

Why I chose this character: I chose this character because I feel that through Olario, I can represent the type of character and personality that does exist within the London gang culture.

Character Comparison: Olario is similar in some ways to Sam from Kidulthood. Both characters are stereotypical lower class male teens who are intimidating, nasty bullies who don’t care about anything or anyone but themselves.

Character 3

Name: Tyler Johnson

Age: 17

Personality: Tyler is the unfortunate victim of the murder that Jamie is forced to do. He is equally as innocent and Jamie and has found himself come worse off in a gang related crime.

Costume Representation: Tyler will be wearing a tracksuit, which represents the way that he is lower class and trying to emulate other gang members, again showing how he does not have a mind of his own.

Why I chose this character: I chose this character because I wanted to show that unfortunately there always have to be a victim, and sometimes the victim is completely undeserving of what happens to them but in the modern gang culture that’s the way it has to be.

'Choice' Synopsis - A2 Film Studies

Synopsis – ‘Choice’

Jamie Thompson (18) is a young male, who is shy, unconfident and scared. These attributes led him to get himself involved with the wrong people. Jamie is going through a difficult and challenging experience in his life after making commitments to a gang, which are known as ‘The Family’.  Jamie finds himself in a situation where, in a question of their commitment to the gang, he has been asked to kill another boy.

One afternoon Jamie is pulled aside by gang leader Olario (21) who is an aggressive and violent male. This aggression is shown in the way he treats Jamie, knowing he can intimidate him into doing what he wants. Olario gives Jamie a choice by offering him a knife, but it is a choice Jamie feels he cannot refuse.

That night, Jamie prepares himself for the worst moment of his life. He pulls on dark, discreet attire and looks into the knife one last time before he commits to the attack. Jamie finds himself in an emotional state of anger and fear. He leaves the house, still unsure of what is about to happen.

After tracking his target down, Jamie enters an alleyway where he knows he will have time to escape. With his target walking towards him completely unaware that his life is in severe danger, Jamie plunges the knife into him. The victim falls to the floor clutching his stomach. Jamie walks away briskly.

Jamie bursts through his bathroom door, breathing heavily, full of adrenalin.  As he cleans the knife of the bloodstains on it, the traumatized young boy sinks to the floor in a flood of tears. Has he made the right choice?

'Choice' Location Reece - A2 Film Studies

Location Recce – ‘Choice’

This is an introduction to the locations that I will be filming in for my film project ‘Prospects’. I will be discussing the reasons for my choice of locations and how I will be using these locations in my five-minute film based on the stereotypes of lower class teenage males. I looked at films such as ‘Kidulthood’ and ‘Harry Brown’ which inspired me to use the locations I have chosen.

Location 1 – Side Street outside abandoned garages

This location will feature in the opening scene of my five-minute film production. I felt that this location was useful for me because I can easily illustrate the representations of my characters through using this location in the right way. In this location, Olario will be physically and verbally intimidating Jamie into taking a knife. I will be trying to reflect ideas of how Jamie feels isolated and scared. I will be using as many different shots and editing techniques as possible throughout this location, including close-ups, extreme close-ups, shot reverse shot and match on action in order to show all the emotion that Jamie feels throughout the scene. This scene will feature mostly non-diegetic sound with little diegetic sound. There is a health and safety risk as, while using this location, as it is near a road, there may well be cars driving past while filming, however I am hoping it will be a quite road, which it usually is. I will be taking security checks throughout the shooting of this scene to ensure we can shoot safely and successfully.

Location 2 – Alleyway

This location will be shown throughout the middle scene of my five-minute production. Using this location, I can show the dangers of being on the streets in gang-ridden areas.  In this location Jamie will be stabbing an innocent young boy due to his orders from gang leader Olario. I will be constantly switching between Jamie and his victim to build tension within the audience as they come together.  This scene will feature non-diegetic sound, with a fast action music playing in order to help with that suspension building within the audience. While shooting this scene a knife will be used which brings an obvious health and safety risk to the set. To prevent this risk as much as possible we will place a plastic covering over the knife in order to make it less sharp. Again security checks will be taken throughout the shooting of this location to ensure we shoot safely and successfully.

Location 3 – Jamie’s house

This location will be used during the pre-stabbing and the after-stabbing. In this location I can reflect the background that Jamie has come from which actually is not lower class. I wanted to show that no matter what background you are from, you can still be involved in what would be deemed as ‘lower class’ activities such as gang related violence. In the first scene that this location is used Jamie will be in his bedroom, trying to build up the confidence to take the knife and go after his target. In this scene I will be using a lot of close-up shots of Jamie’s face, attempting to portray the emotions that he is feeling. During this scene, low-key diegetic sound will be heard.  The second time this location will be used is in Jamie’s bathroom, where he will be cleaning the knife after the stabbing.  This scene will feature more long shots to show Jamie’s full body language. In the scene more non-diegetic sound will be heard with slow low-key music to reflect the film coming towards an end. Similarly to the alleyway, a knife will be used in while shooting and therefore we have to be extremely careful when handling it. Security checks will be continued throughout the shooting.
